Tons of Fun in the Eastway Business Park, Tipperary Road, Limerickis an activity centre for children aged 0 to 11 years. They have a Toddlers and Wobblers area for 0-3 year olds, a Junior Play area for 3-5 year olds, an Adventure Activity area for 5-11 year olds and a quiet corner with playhouse, books, crayons and colouring pages for the less energetic.
There are some good cinema options as well including the Limerick Omniplex, Crescent Shopping Centre in Dooradoyle and Storm cinema which runs a Kids club on a Saturday morning.
The Adare Heritage Centre is situated in Ireland’s most picturesque village and allows you and family to experience this area’s unique history, spanning the years from 1233 to the present day. The story is told through realistic model enactments and audio visuals in French, Italian, German, Irish and English. A Guided Tour of Desmond Castle is available throughout the high season. The centre also houses a Tourist Information Office, the Dovecot Restaurant, Black Abbey Crafts, Kerry Woollen Mills and Curran's Heraldry.
Foynes Flying Boat Museum is a good one for the kids. A little known fact but one that will thrill all budding pilots is that from 1939-1945 Foynes, County Limerick was the centre of the aviation world. The port of Foynes was the fulcrum point for air traffic between the US and Europe. The famous flying boats were frequent visitors, carrying a diverse range of people, from celebrities to refugees. The Foynes Museum recalls this era with a comprehensive range of exhibits and graphic illustrations. The family can travel back in time in an authentic 1940s cinema, while watching award-winning film "Atlantic Conquest" which has been compiled from original footage from the days of the Flying Boats. Adults can an Irish Coffee where Chef Joe Sheridan made the first Irish Coffee to warm up some damp miserable passengers in 1942.
The Hunt Museum in Limerick exhibits a unique internationally renowned private collection of over 2,000 original works of art and antiquity collected by John and Gertrude Hunt over their lifetimes. The wide ranging and fascinating collection is a treasure trove which reflects not only the Celtic past but includes objects such as the Leonardo da Vinci horse, the Mary Queen of Scots Cross and one of the original “30 pieces of silver”. Paintings include works by Renoir, Picasso and Yeats. Housed at The Custom House, one of Limerick’s finest Georgian buildings on the banks of the River Shannon. As usual in a gallery it can be hard to hold children’s attention so try to play spot the painting when they tick off a painting when they see one.
King John's Castle was built between 1200 and 1210 and was repaired and extended many times in the following centuries. The interpretative centre at the Castle is family friendly and contains an imaginative historical exhibition which tells the story of the Castle. Archaeological excavations have revealed Pre Norman settlements and evidence from the traumatic siege of 1642. The courtyard and the Castle display some of the trades and traditions of the 16th century. The Castle offers panoramic views of Limerick city and the surrounding countryside.
